Ketone Body Generation

Meaning

Ketone Body Generation, or ketogenesis, is the metabolic process occurring primarily in the liver mitochondria, where fatty acids are broken down to produce three water-soluble molecules: acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and acetone. This process is a crucial adaptive response during periods of prolonged fasting, carbohydrate restriction, or strenuous exercise when glucose availability is low. The resulting ketone bodies serve as an efficient, alternative energy substrate for peripheral tissues and, importantly, the brain.
