A Ketogenic Protocol is a dietary regimen characterized by a very low intake of carbohydrates, a moderate intake of protein, and a high intake of dietary fat, deliberately designed to shift the body’s primary metabolic state from glucose utilization to ketosis. This metabolic state involves the liver producing ketone bodies from fat, which the brain and other tissues can then use as an alternative and highly efficient fuel source. Clinically, this protocol is used for managing certain neurological conditions, optimizing body composition, and improving insulin sensitivity.
Origin
The Ketogenic Protocol was originally developed in the 1920s as a therapeutic dietary intervention for refractory epilepsy, long before its popularization for weight management. The term combines ‘ketogenic,’ meaning producing ketones, with ‘protocol,’ indicating a detailed, systematic plan for treatment or action. Its current widespread application in the wellness space reflects renewed scientific interest in the metabolic and hormonal effects of nutritional ketosis.
Mechanism
The mechanism relies on drastically reducing carbohydrate availability, which lowers blood glucose and consequently reduces the secretion of insulin, a key anabolic hormone. Low insulin levels signal the liver to increase fatty acid oxidation, leading to the production of three main ketone bodies: beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), acetoacetate, and acetone. BHB, the primary circulating ketone, acts as a signaling molecule that can modulate gene expression, reduce inflammation, and provide a stable, efficient energy source for the brain and muscles.
