Keratinocyte Differentiation

Meaning

Keratinocyte differentiation is the highly organized biological process where basal keratinocytes in the epidermis undergo a programmed maturation, progressively flattening and producing specialized proteins like keratin and lipids, ultimately forming the robust protective outer layer of the skin. This cellular transformation involves distinct morphological and biochemical changes as cells migrate upwards from the stratum basale to the stratum corneum. The process is essential for maintaining the skin’s barrier function and integrity against environmental stressors and pathogens.
