Keap1

Meaning

Keap1, or Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1, is a critical sensor protein within the cell cytoplasm that functions as the primary negative regulator of the Nrf2 transcription factor, a master regulator of the cellular antioxidant and detoxification response. Under normal, non-stressed conditions, Keap1 binds to and facilitates the degradation of Nrf2, keeping the protective genetic machinery dormant. In the context of hormonal health and longevity, Keap1’s activity is central because it dictates the cell’s capacity to manage oxidative stress and clear reactive metabolites, which are key drivers of endocrine aging and receptor desensitization. Modulating the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway is a significant target for anti-aging and metabolic health interventions.
