Jaundice

Meaning

Jaundice is a clinical sign characterized by the yellowish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes, medically termed scleral icterus. This condition arises from an elevated concentration of bilirubin in the bloodstream, known as hyperbilirubinemia. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment that naturally forms during the breakdown of aged red blood cells.
