Islet Cell Neogenesis

Meaning

Islet cell neogenesis describes the biological process of forming new pancreatic islet cells, particularly insulin-producing beta cells, from precursor cells within or near the pancreas. This process is distinct from existing beta cell replication, representing de novo generation of these crucial endocrine cells. Its primary physiological role is to maintain or restore adequate beta cell mass for glucose homeostasis.
