Iron Homeostasis Regulation is the complex, tightly controlled physiological process by which the body maintains a stable balance between iron absorption, recycling, storage, and utilization to meet metabolic demands while simultaneously preventing toxicity. This systemic regulation is vital because iron is essential for oxygen transport and numerous enzymatic reactions, yet excess free iron is highly pro-oxidative and damaging to cellular structures. The regulation is predominantly governed by the peptide hormone hepcidin.
