Iron-Dependent Enzymes

Meaning

Iron-dependent enzymes are a critical class of metalloenzymes that require iron, often in the form of a heme group or an iron-sulfur cluster, to catalyze essential biochemical reactions throughout the body. These enzymes are indispensable for cellular respiration, DNA synthesis, and the metabolism of hormones and neurotransmitters. Their activity is directly compromised when functional iron stores are depleted, even in the absence of overt anemia.
