IRAK-M

Meaning

IRAK-M, which stands for Interleukin-1 Receptor-Associated Kinase M, is a crucial intracellular protein that functions as a potent negative regulator of the innate immune response, primarily acting within immune cells like macrophages. It is a key component in the negative feedback loop that terminates inflammatory signaling initiated by Toll-like Receptors and Interleukin-1 receptors. High expression of IRAK-M is a hallmark of the state known as endotoxin tolerance, serving to dampen excessive or chronic inflammatory signaling.
