Ion Channel Modulation

Meaning

Ion channel modulation is the process of altering the functional state or conductance properties of specific transmembrane proteins that regulate the flow of ions, such as sodium, potassium, or chloride, across the cell membrane. This modification, which can be achieved by endogenous hormones, neurotransmitters, or pharmacological agents, directly influences cellular excitability, signaling, and volume regulation. It is a fundamental, rapid mechanism in neuroendocrine and cardiovascular physiology, often complementing slower genomic effects.
