Intrinsic Aging

Meaning

Intrinsic aging, also known as chronological aging, refers to the inevitable, genetically programmed, and time-dependent degenerative changes that occur in all organs and tissues, independent of external environmental factors. This internal process is driven by fundamental biological mechanisms such as telomere shortening, cumulative DNA damage, and the progressive decline in cellular replication capacity. It manifests in the skin as fine wrinkles, dryness, and atrophy in sun-protected areas. Intrinsic aging sets the baseline rate of decline, which is then often accelerated by extrinsic factors.
