Intrauterine System

Meaning

An Intrauterine System (IUS) is a highly effective, long-acting reversible contraceptive device placed directly into the uterine cavity, characterized by the controlled, localized release of a progestin hormone, typically levonorgestrel. Unlike copper intrauterine devices, the IUS primarily functions through hormonal mechanisms to prevent pregnancy and is also clinically utilized for managing heavy menstrual bleeding and endometrial protection during estrogen therapy. It represents a significant advancement in hormonal delivery and reproductive health.
