Intratumoral Androgen Synthesis

Meaning

Intratumoral androgen synthesis describes the autonomous production of androgenic steroid hormones, primarily testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, directly within tumor cells rather than solely relying on endocrine glands such as the testes or adrenal glands. This localized steroidogenesis establishes an independent source of ligands for androgen receptors, enabling cancer cells to sustain growth in environments with low circulating systemic androgen levels. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in the context of hormone-sensitive malignancies.
