Intramyocellular Triglycerides

Meaning

Intramyocellular triglycerides (IMTGs) represent the small lipid droplets stored directly within the cytoplasm of muscle cells, serving as a readily available, local energy reserve for muscle contraction, particularly during endurance exercise. While a necessary fuel source for athletes, excessively high levels of IMTGs in sedentary or insulin-resistant individuals are clinically correlated with impaired insulin signaling and metabolic dysfunction. This dual role makes IMTGs a critical biomarker in metabolic health and diabetes pathology.
