Intraglomerular Pressure

Meaning

Intraglomerular pressure is the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the fluid within the delicate glomerular capillaries of the kidney’s nephron, which serves as the fundamental filtration unit. This specific pressure is the single most important driving force for glomerular filtration, the essential initial step in urine formation where plasma fluid and small solutes are pushed across the capillary wall into Bowman’s capsule. Maintaining this critical pressure within a narrow, tightly regulated physiological range is absolutely essential for stable renal function, consistent glomerular filtration rate, and the maintenance of systemic fluid-electrolyte balance.
