Intracrinology Brain

Meaning

A specialized concept in neuroendocrinology referring to the capacity of the brain’s glial cells and neurons to synthesize, metabolize, and regulate steroid hormones entirely within the central nervous system, independent of peripheral endocrine glands like the adrenals or gonads. This localized hormonal system, known as intracrinology, allows the brain to rapidly and precisely control the concentration of neurosteroids, such as DHEA and allopregnanolone, at specific synaptic sites. The existence of this intrinsic system highlights the brain’s autonomous role in modulating mood, cognition, and neuroprotection.
