Intracranial Pressure

Meaning

Intracranial Pressure (ICP) is the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the brain parenchyma, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and cerebral blood volume within the rigid, non-distensible confines of the skull. This physiological parameter is meticulously maintained within a narrow, normal range to ensure adequate cerebral perfusion and prevent compression of delicate neural tissues. Abnormal elevation of ICP is a critical, life-threatening concern in neurosurgery and intensive care medicine.
