Intracranial Hypertension

Meaning

Intracranial Hypertension (IH) is a clinical condition characterized by an abnormal elevation of pressure within the skull, specifically in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compartment. This increased pressure can compromise cerebral perfusion, potentially leading to visual impairment, severe headaches, and other neurological deficits. IH can arise from various etiologies, including space-occupying lesions, venous outflow obstruction, or, in the absence of a discernible mass, as Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). The monitoring and management of this pressure are crucial for preventing irreversible damage to the optic nerve and brain tissue.
