Intracellular Fluid

Meaning

Intracellular Fluid, or ICF, is the aqueous medium and its dissolved solutes contained within the cell membrane, constituting approximately two-thirds of the body’s total water volume. This essential compartment provides the environment necessary for all cellular metabolic processes, including glycolysis, protein synthesis, and DNA replication. The precise composition of the ICF, particularly its high concentration of potassium and phosphate ions, is tightly regulated and distinct from the surrounding extracellular fluid. Maintaining the appropriate volume and electrolyte balance of the ICF is crucial for cell viability and overall physiological homeostasis.
