Intimal Hyperplasia

Meaning

Intimal hyperplasia refers to the pathological proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells from the media into the innermost layer of an artery, the intima, leading to a thickening of the vessel wall and subsequent narrowing of the lumen. This process is a non-atherosclerotic form of vascular remodeling that reduces the effective blood flow capacity of the affected vessel.
