Intestinal Permeability Testing

Meaning

Intestinal Permeability Testing is a diagnostic procedure used in clinical practice to assess the integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, often referred to as “leaky gut,” by measuring the passage of non-metabolized molecules from the intestinal lumen into the bloodstream. An increase in permeability indicates compromised tight junctions between epithelial cells, allowing toxins, antigens, and microbial products to enter the circulation, often triggering systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation. This assessment is a critical tool for investigating the root cause of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
