Intestinal Hyperpermeability

Meaning

A clinical condition, often colloquially referred to as “leaky gut,” characterized by a compromised integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier, leading to increased passage of undigested food particles, microbial products, and toxins into the underlying lamina propria and systemic circulation. This heightened permeability is a significant contributor to systemic inflammation, which can then negatively impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and drive peripheral hormonal resistance. This phenomenon directly links gut health to endocrine and metabolic wellness.
