Intestinal Homeostasis

Meaning

Intestinal Homeostasis is the state of dynamic equilibrium within the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by a balanced and stable relationship between the host’s immune system, the epithelial barrier, and the vast commensal gut microbiota. This balanced state ensures efficient nutrient absorption, prevents the translocation of pathogens and toxins, and maintains appropriate immune tolerance to food antigens and beneficial bacteria. Disruptions to this critical balance can lead to systemic inflammation and chronic disease.
