Interstitial Space Expansion

Meaning

A clinical and physiological phenomenon characterized by an abnormal increase in the volume of the interstitial fluid, the fluid that bathes the cells in the tissues outside of the blood vessels and lymphatics. This expansion is often indicative of underlying fluid and electrolyte dysregulation, inflammation, or compromised lymphatic drainage. It can clinically manifest as edema and is a critical marker of systemic fluid balance and tissue health.
