Interstitial Fluid

Meaning

Interstitial Fluid (ISF) is the fluid that bathes the cells of the body, existing in the spaces between the cells outside the vascular and lymphatic systems. This compartment serves as the immediate medium for the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, hormones, and waste products between the blood plasma and the tissue cells. Its composition is directly reflective of the local cellular environment and critical for paracrine signaling.
