Intermediate Metabolizer

Meaning

An Intermediate Metabolizer refers to an individual whose genetic makeup results in a reduced, but not absent, functional activity of specific drug-metabolizing enzymes, typically cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. This metabolic capacity falls between that of a poor metabolizer, who has very low or no enzyme activity, and an extensive (normal) metabolizer, who exhibits full or typical enzyme function. This classification is crucial in pharmacogenomics, influencing how the body processes various medications.
