Intermediate Metabolizer

Meaning

An Intermediate Metabolizer is a pharmacogenomic classification describing an individual whose genetic profile results in a reduced, but not completely absent, capacity to metabolize specific drugs or endogenous compounds, often due to polymorphisms in cytochrome P450 enzymes. This phenotype falls between the extremes of poor and extensive metabolizers, typically possessing one fully functional allele and one reduced-function allele for the enzyme in question. This metabolic rate influences the pharmacokinetics of hormones and related therapeutic agents.
