Interleukin-6 (IL-6)

Meaning

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine, a small protein released by immune cells and various other cell types, that plays a critical role in mediating the acute phase reaction and systemic inflammation. Clinically, chronically elevated levels of IL-6 are recognized as a high-resolution biomarker for persistent, low-grade systemic inflammation, which is a major driver of age-related diseases and metabolic dysfunction. In the context of hormonal health, IL-6 directly influences the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, stimulating the release of ACTH and subsequently cortisol, thus linking the immune and endocrine stress responses.
