Interleukin-6

Meaning

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine, a type of signaling protein, that plays a dual role in human physiology, acting as both a pro-inflammatory mediator and an anti-inflammatory myokine. Clinically, chronically elevated basal levels of IL-6 are a key biomarker for systemic low-grade inflammation, which is implicated in numerous chronic diseases and hormonal dysregulation. However, acute, exercise-induced spikes of IL-6, secreted by contracting muscles, promote metabolic health and tissue repair. Its context-dependent action makes it a crucial target in precision wellness.
