Insulin Sensitivity Reduction

Meaning

Insulin Sensitivity Reduction, commonly referred to as insulin resistance, is a pathophysiological condition where target cells in critical metabolic tissues, including muscle, adipose tissue, and the liver, exhibit a diminished biological response to the circulating action of insulin. This requires the pancreas to compensate by secreting progressively higher levels of insulin to maintain normal blood glucose, leading to chronic hyperinsulinemia. This state represents a foundational metabolic impairment that significantly elevates the risk for Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic inflammation.
