Insulin Sensitivity Cortisol

Meaning

Insulin sensitivity cortisol refers to the direct, antagonistic physiological relationship where the concentration of the glucocorticoid cortisol significantly modulates the body’s responsiveness to insulin. Specifically, chronically elevated cortisol, a state often induced by persistent stress, reduces insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, notably muscle and fat cells. This impaired sensitivity necessitates higher insulin secretion to maintain euglycemia, often leading to hyperinsulinemia and contributing to metabolic dysfunction.
