Insulin Sensitivity and SHBG

Meaning

Insulin Sensitivity and SHBG represent two closely interconnected physiological markers that are critically important for assessing both metabolic and hormonal health. Insulin sensitivity quantifies the effectiveness with which cells respond to the insulin signal to facilitate glucose uptake from the bloodstream, while Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a glycoprotein synthesized by the liver that binds and transports sex steroids, including testosterone and estradiol. Clinically, a state of reduced insulin sensitivity, known as insulin resistance, shows a strong inverse correlation with low circulating SHBG levels, signifying a shared underlying metabolic dysfunction.
