Insulin secretion is the process by which pancreatic beta cells, located within the Islets of Langerhans, release the peptide hormone insulin into the bloodstream. This process is primarily triggered by elevated blood glucose levels following a meal, serving as the body’s main mechanism for regulating carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Appropriate and timely insulin secretion is crucial for maintaining euglycemia and ensuring that energy substrates are efficiently taken up by muscle, fat, and liver cells. Dysfunction in this process is a central feature in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
