Insulin Resistance in Women

Meaning

Insulin Resistance in Women is a pathological condition where peripheral target tissues, including skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and the liver, exhibit a diminished biological response to the normal circulating actions of insulin, resulting in compensatory hyperinsulinemia. This state is a central pathophysiological feature of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and significantly elevates a woman’s risk for developing type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. The clinical presentation is frequently compounded by visceral adiposity and subsequent androgen excess.
