Insulin Resistance HPG Axis

Meaning

The bidirectional pathological interaction where peripheral insulin resistance, a state of impaired glucose utilization, directly compromises the normal function of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis. This disruption manifests as reduced Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) pulsatility, suppressed Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) secretion, and ultimately, impaired gonadal steroidogenesis. It represents a key metabolic driver of functional hypogonadism in both sexes.
