Insulin Resistance from HGH

Meaning

A clinically recognized metabolic complication where the therapeutic administration of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) or the pathological excess of endogenous HGH, such as in acromegaly, causes a state of diminished sensitivity of peripheral tissues to the action of insulin. This antagonism leads to impaired glucose uptake by muscle and adipose tissue, resulting in elevated circulating glucose levels and a compensatory increase in insulin secretion, known as hyperinsulinemia. This endocrine-induced metabolic perturbation is a critical factor in managing HGH therapy, requiring careful clinical monitoring of glucose homeostasis to prevent the onset of impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes mellitus.
