Insulin Resistance Development

Meaning

Insulin resistance development is the progressive pathological process where target cells, primarily in muscle, adipose, and liver tissues, become significantly less responsive to the actions of the anabolic hormone insulin. This diminished cellular response necessitates the pancreatic beta cells to secrete increasingly higher levels of insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels, a state known as compensatory hyperinsulinemia. It represents a foundational metabolic disorder that clinically precedes the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and contributes to numerous chronic health issues.
