Inhibin B

Meaning

Inhibin B is a dimeric glycoprotein hormone, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily, produced primarily by the granulosa cells of the ovarian follicles in females and the Sertoli cells of the testes in males. Its fundamental role is to provide negative feedback to the pituitary gland, selectively suppressing the secretion of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) without affecting Luteinizing Hormone (LH) release. Clinically, serum Inhibin B levels serve as a functional biomarker of gonadal activity, reflecting the status of spermatogenesis in men and the size of the developing follicle cohort in women.
