Infradian Rhythms

Meaning

Infradian rhythms are biological cycles that oscillate with a period significantly longer than the standard 24-hour circadian cycle, most notably exemplified by the female menstrual cycle, which averages approximately 28 days. These rhythms are orchestrated by complex neuroendocrine feedback loops, primarily involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, and profoundly influence metabolism, mood, sleep, and overall cellular vitality. Recognizing and supporting these longer cycles is crucial for optimizing hormonal health, particularly in women, as they dictate cyclical changes in physiology.
