Information Blocking

Meaning

Information Blocking is the practice, often by healthcare providers, health information networks, or electronic health record (EHR) developers, of knowingly and intentionally interfering with the access, exchange, or use of electronic health information (EHI) when legally permitted. This deliberate obstruction prevents the seamless flow of clinical data necessary for comprehensive patient care, including critical hormonal lab results or treatment summaries required for collaborative wellness planning. It is a practice that directly impedes the patient’s right to their own health data.
