Inflammasome

Meaning

The Inflammasome refers to a complex, multiprotein intracellular signaling platform that assembles in the cytoplasm of various immune and non-immune cells. This molecular machinery is central to the innate immune system’s capacity to detect specific pathogenic microorganisms and sterile stressors, leading to the activation of inflammatory caspases, particularly caspase-1. Its activation results in the proteolytic maturation and subsequent secretion of potent pro-inflammatory cytokines, notably interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18), alongside the induction of pyroptosis, a distinct form of programmed cell death.
