Inferential Privacy Risk

Meaning

Inferential privacy risk is the potential for sophisticated data analysis techniques, including machine learning algorithms, to deduce sensitive personal health information, such as an underlying endocrine disorder or reproductive status, from seemingly innocuous or anonymized data sets. This risk arises when non-identifiable physiological metrics, like heart rate variability or sleep patterns collected by a wellness app, are combined with other data points to infer a diagnosis or predict a future health state. The challenge is that even robust data de-identification may not fully mitigate the ability to reconstruct a sensitive hormonal profile.
