Incretin System

Meaning

The Incretin System is a crucial component of glucose homeostasis, comprising a group of gut-derived hormones released into the circulation shortly after the ingestion of nutrients. The two most significant incretin hormones are Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP). This system acts physiologically to potentiate glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta cells, thereby playing a vital role in the meticulous regulation of postprandial blood sugar levels. Its function is a major pharmacological target in the clinical management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
