Incremental Shuttle Walk Test

Meaning

The Incremental Shuttle Walk Test (ISWT) is a standardized, clinically utilized field exercise test designed to assess the functional exercise capacity and cardiorespiratory fitness of patients with chronic diseases, particularly pulmonary or cardiac conditions. The test requires the patient to walk between two cones placed a specific distance apart, with the walking speed incrementally increasing at fixed intervals signaled by an auditory cue. It provides an objective, reproducible measure of the maximum distance walked, correlating well with peak oxygen consumption (VO2 peak).
