Incidental Findings

Meaning

Incidental findings, in a clinical context, are unexpected abnormalities discovered during medical imaging or laboratory testing that was performed for a reason unrelated to the finding itself. These findings, often referred to as “incidentalomas,” can range from clinically insignificant anatomical variants to potentially serious, undiagnosed pathologies, such as adrenal or pituitary tumors. Managing these discoveries requires careful clinical judgment to balance the risks of unnecessary further investigation against the potential benefit of early diagnosis and intervention. They present a common ethical and diagnostic challenge in modern medicine.
