Inadvertent Drug Exposure

Meaning

Inadvertent Drug Exposure is the unintentional contact with or administration of a pharmaceutical agent outside of its prescribed therapeutic use, often resulting in unintended physiological effects or harm. In a clinical or compounding setting, this specifically refers to occupational exposure of healthcare workers to hazardous drugs, such as potent hormones or chemotherapy agents, through inhalation, dermal absorption, or accidental injection. For patients, it can involve accidental ingestion of medication intended for another individual or incorrect dosing due to a medication error.
