In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Meaning

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a sophisticated core assisted reproductive technology procedure where a woman’s oocytes are surgically retrieved and then fertilized by sperm in a controlled environment outside of the body, literally in vitro, which means “in glass.” Following the successful achievement of fertilization and a period of early embryonic development in a specialized laboratory incubator, one or more of the resulting embryos are carefully transferred back into the woman’s uterus with the ultimate goal of establishing a successful, sustained pregnancy. This comprehensive process is clinically utilized to address a wide spectrum of infertility causes, including severe tubal factor disease, significant male factor infertility, and cases of unexplained infertility.
