In Silico Prediction

Meaning

In silico prediction is a scientific and clinical methodology that utilizes computer simulations, computational modeling, and bioinformatics tools to predict the outcome of biological or chemical processes. The term literally means “in silicon,” referring to the silicon chips of a computer, contrasting with in vivo (in life) and in vitro (in glass). In the hormonal and pharmaceutical domains, this technique is employed to predict a compound’s binding affinity to a specific hormone receptor, its metabolic fate, or its potential toxicity profile before costly and time-consuming laboratory or clinical trials commence. It is a powerful tool for accelerating the discovery and development of targeted therapies.
