Imprinting Disorders

Meaning

Imprinting disorders are a distinct group of genetic conditions characterized by abnormal gene expression due to errors in genomic imprinting, an epigenetic process. This process involves specific chemical modifications, primarily DNA methylation, that regulate whether a gene is expressed from the maternally or paternally inherited chromosome. These disorders arise when the precise epigenetic marks, established during gametogenesis or early embryonic development, are disrupted, leading to incorrect dosage of imprinted genes.
