Immunocompromised Host

Meaning

An Immunocompromised Host is an individual whose immune system function is impaired or weakened, rendering them highly susceptible to infections and certain malignancies that a healthy immune system would typically control. This state of reduced immune defense can be a result of underlying medical conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, congenital immune deficiencies, or chronic hormonal dysregulation, or it may be iatrogenic, resulting from immunosuppressive medications like high-dose corticosteroids or chemotherapy. Clinical management of these individuals requires meticulous attention to infection prophylaxis and a cautious approach to hormonal therapies that might further impact immune function.
