Immune System Memory

Meaning

The acquired capacity of the adaptive immune system to recognize and mount a rapid, potent, and specific response upon re-exposure to a previously encountered pathogen or antigen. This immunological recall is mediated by long-lived memory T and B lymphocytes, providing enduring protection against infectious agents. The integrity of this memory is a key determinant of an individual’s long-term disease resistance and vaccine efficacy. Age-related decline, or immunosenescence, impairs this crucial function.
